These are the words that you might associate with eating disorders. Many people come up with an extremely skinny individual seems like under 80lbs when it comes to eating disorder. Today, I would like to inform you of the importance of eating disorder. This is not about simply people with underweight, rather it is about one of the highest ranked mortality rate among psychological disorders. Some articles and studies state that eating disorder have existed even centuries ago. A few case reports show that there was a type of self-starvation and religious fast ing in the past, and certainly those behaviors are strongly related to anorexia nervosa (Habermas, 1989, p.260-p.263). Another case studies insist that various ancient cultures show bulimic type of behaviors such as vomiting as a self-cleansing method. As those formal studies described, you may notice that eating disorders are not a choice of lifestyle nor just the consequences of cultural bias (Berner, 2016, p.7-p.9). There should be much more complicated causes rather than self-esteem just like any other psychological disorders. It is a relatively common disorder Now, you may wonder then what would be noticeable symptoms of eating disorders if distorted view of self-body image and self-starvation are not enough to meet the criteria for its diagnosis. First of all, I would like to mention that the prevalence of eating disorders is increasing over the past few decades (Cusack McGlone, 2016). It is not negligible due to high mortality rates of this psychiatric disorder. Moreover, with its inappropriate conceptions people generally have towards eating disorders make people who are suffering from eating disorders more difficult to get help.
